How to get to Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu was chosen as one of the Seven Wonders of the New World in 2007, and receives millions of visitors every year. Because of its popularity, a visit to this site must be planned and tickets must be booked in advance. Although the costs required are not cheap, tourists with a limited budget can still enjoy a trip to Machu Picchu.

Experienced climbers usually climb 2-4 days to Machu Picchu via the Inca Trail, which requires permission. Only 500 permits are issued every day, and sometimes permits are sold out in the previous months. This line is closed every February for maintenance. Other trails include tracks from Lares and Salcantay (Salkantay), the highest peak in the Vilcabamba mountain range. All tracks in this area require guides, which can be rented in Cusco, where the Inca Trail begins, or in Lares or Salcantay as an alternative hiking trail.

Novice climbers or tourists who want to get to Machu Picchu in the easiest and fastest way, can take the train from Cusco, Urubamba or Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo. From there, climbing to Machu Picchu takes about one and a half hours.

For visitors who don’t want to hike, buses depart regularly to Machu Picchu from Aguas Calientes. The trip takes about 20 minutes.
